An injury is, perhaps, a tennis player’s worst nightmare: it throws off their rhythm. Both mentally and physically, it causes relentless distress. Carlos Alcaraz recently suffered this setback at the Rio Open first round, having to retire from the competition due to an ankle injury.

The world number two sustained an injury in his first encounter against Brazilian Thiago Monteiro. While he left the court limping, he recently opened up about the seriousness of his injury.

The Spaniard needed medical care after hurting his ankle on the tennis court just after the game’s second point. Even though the 20-year-old tennis player came back to the court and gave his opponent tough competition, he was forced to retire after losing the next game and the match with a score of 1-1.

While making his fans worry about how he left the tennis court, all limping and dwelling in pain. In a press conference after the tournament, he opened up about his injury and the seriousness behind it. He said, “The physios said it’s not serious. [The fall] was bad. I was in pain… I thought it would be difficult to continue the game.”

Further, he also highlighted that, because of the pain, he decided to take a step back, rather than stressing himself out. Along with that, “It’s bothering me to walk… it hurts. Let’s take it easy. I will recover and rest today. Tomorrow I will take exams”.
