Before going into the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix this year, Noah Lyles dived into a cryptic share of words with 60mH legend Grant Holloway. The lauded 60m hurdles royalty pricked Noah Lyles into showing his chance at the 60m event. Being an outrageous athlete, the 26-year-old American sprinter accepted the challenge from Holloway to make the event historical. Eventually, Lyles succeeded in that challenge.

Noah Lyles pushed himself to a level on Saturday that the 60m indoor mythical sprinter bowed before him. That vaunted fiery run could defeat any folklore. But questing the reason behind it, Grant Holloway’s challenge, wasn’t the only succulent factor to extract the best out of Noah Lyles. Some whole years witnessed him chasing the best timings in the event, riding on grit. Here’s an excerpt of that. 

Rise in performance, dip in the clock, destroying opposition 

For Noah Lyles, his registered 60m-timing had come from the New Balance Indoor nationals in 2015. The 6.65 timing had given him the second position after Ryan Clark. However, in the race, he didn’t have to face Christian Coleman. But for the 4x Diamond League champion, the steady changes were visible since his appearance in the Ocean Breeze Athletics Complex in 2021.

Noah could complete the 60m indoor event, taking 6. 76 seconds. With a fourth-place finish, Noah had to look at Trayvon Bromell grabbing the top position (6.50) in that race. In the next few years, a thorough improvement was in place as his movement on the last half of the track strikingly increased. In the very next year, the 2022 Müller Indoor Grand Prix at the Utilita Arena Birmingham saw him acquiring the top spot with a time of 6.55. After that time parameter only witnessed constant shaving.

In 2023, at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, Noah avenged his past defeat to Bromell while further reducing his time to 6.51. The NBC Sports Director of Social Media, Travis Miller, noted these timings minutely. Eventually, on Saturday, Miller perked those timings in his X-post, adding, “Noah Lyles’ 60m progression #USATFIndoors.” But even after the improvement, Noah Lyles’ dominance was somewhat under scrutiny for a vital reason.

From 2018 to 2022, Noah Lyles had to face repeated defeats in 60m from Christian Coleman, a revered force in the event. That reason also fell flat in Albuquerque last night for .01 seconds. Noah’s continuous pursuit of the best is surely the deciding factor here. But interestingly, another factor seems to have a fair share of impact as well.

Noah Lyles has found an arch-rival to chase in every category of sprinting. In the 100m, the feud with Letsile Tebogo influenced Noah Lyles to unfurl his best timings. In the 200m, the rise of Erriyon Knighton inspired as well, the threepeter to strive for the best timing. With Christian Coleman present, Noah could save his best for the 60m indoor event on that estimate. After winning the bout against Coleman in the 60m at last, the new national champion confessed the same. 

Noah Lyles counts on the opposition for his best color 

In Boston this year, Ackeem Blake and Ronnie Baker’s stiff opposition infuriated Noah Lyles. Meanwhile, Ronnie threw challenges at Noah on previous occasions as well. But on those platforms, the presence of Christian Coleman turned out to be the motivating factor for the 6x world champion. He accepted that without mincing words right after his victory over Coleman.

Eventually, after winning his only 60m indoor event against Coleman, Noah disclosed that fact. “…if I hadn’t faced Christian so many times, I couldn’t boost my confidence,” he said. Preferably, he acknowledged other events also as Christian Coleman holds his supremacy in a range of sprinting events. But definitely, a stiff opposite can do miracles for Noah Lyles. His timing of 6.43 in 60m held that truth firmly.
