UFC News: Ilia Topuria Confirms Alexander Volkanovski Rematch in Spain After Humiliating Ex-Champ at UFC 298

Ilia Topuria came through on his promise and knocked Alexander Volkanovski out cold in the second round at UFC 298, to the collective shock of the UFC world. Seemingly unbeatable at one point, the now former featherweight champion has now lost three of his last four fights, with a second knockout in a row.

Topuria came out strong, peppering the Australian with a few solid rights even as Volkanovski landed a few calf kicks on him. Volkanovski seems to have found his rhythm in the second round, until Topuria put him on the cage and landed a thunderous right, knocking Alexander Volkanovski out.

However, Volkanovski is still the greatest featherweight in UFC history and cannot be counted out. It is natural, therefore for the topic of rematch to be brought up. In the post-fight press conference, Topuria was asked about a potential rematch with the Australian.

‘El Matador’ was all in and said that if the UFC wanted to make it happen in his adopted country of Spain, he would agree to the rematch. I don’t know if if the UFC offers me to bring the UFC to Spain and do the rematch with Volkanovski, I’m in. Let’s go, let’s do it. No f***ing problem,” he told reporters. And Volkanovski too, has called for a rematch in his interaction with the press following his second straight knockout loss.

In the post-fight press conference, Alexander Volkanovski, expressed his eagerness for a rematch with Ilia Topuria. Despite the tough loss, ‘Alexander The Great’ seemed upbeat and positive, giving props to Topuria for catching him flush on the chin. The Australian felt that he made a mistake by allowing himself to be pushed to the cage and standing square in front of Topuria.

And even as Volkanovski calls for an immediate rematch, there is another, albeit, unlikely candidate for who ‘El Matador’ could fight next: Conor McGregor. Topuria called out the UFC megastar in the post-fight octagon interview. “Conor McGregor, if you still have some balls, I will be waiting for you in Spain!” Topuria thundered.

The new featherweight champion discussed a potential McGregor bout in the press conference and told reporters that he was willing to fight the former two-division champion at any weight class of his choosing.
